Fly-Tipping: What Is It & How Does It Affect The Environment?

Fly-tipping is classed as the ‘illegal deposit of any waste onto land that does not have a licence to accept it’.

It is a serious offense in the United Kingdom and causes many problems for the environment, landowners and local community.

Typically, household waste and appliances are fly-tipped, but at the larger end of the scale, fly-tipping can involve several tonnes of hazardous construction waste.

This uncontrolled and illegal waste can cause harm to the public and environment, as it is likely to contain toxic material and asbestos.

If waste leaks into the ground, there is a risk of damage to the local watercourses and soil, which in turn could endanger wildlife and humans.

In 2018/2019, local authorities in England dealt with over 1 million cases of fly-tipping, of which nearly two thirds of cases involved household waste. It is estimated over £60m was spent clearing up fly-tipped waste that year alone.

Fines For fly-tipping

Fly-tipping is a criminal offence punishable by a fine of up to £50,000 or 12-months imprisonment if convicted in a Magistrates’ Court. The offence can attract an unlimited fine and up to 5 years imprisonment if convicted in a Crown Court. There are also a number of other possible penalties, including fixed penalty notices and having a vehicle seized. Householders can be fined up to £400 if they pass their waste to an unlicensed waste carrier which is subsequently fly tipped.

How To Dispose of Waste Safely

There are many methods to safely dispose of waste, including hiring a waste management company. If you use a company to take away your domestic or commercial waste, make sure that the company is reputable and has a valid waste carriers license.

If your waste is dumped or fly-tipped by a third-party, you are still responsible and could be subject to fines up to £400.
